MAYS LANDING- An Atlantic County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against a Mays Landing man for the death of a man after striking him during an incident on Nov. 2, 2017, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.
Calvin Wiggins, 24, has been indicted on charges of Aggravated Manslaughter for the death, after he struck John Charlton, 54, of Mays Landing. Wiggins was initially charged with Aggravated Assault
Hamilton Township Police responded to the scene on November 2, 2017, where Calvin Wiggins was involved in a domestic dispute on the Route 40 roadway near the intersection of Cantillion Blvd. The investigation revealed that Charlton exited his vehicle and yelled at Wiggins to stop assaulting a woman, when he was punched by Wiggins. Charlton subsequently fell to the ground and struck his head and he never regained consciousness.
Charlton had been hospitalized at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, since the Nov. 2 assault and he died on Sunday Nov. 12, as a result of the injuries sustained.
The investigation was handled by Hamilton Township Police Detective Craig Clayton.
Wiggins remains in custody at the Atlantic County Justice Facility, following a detention hearing last month.
