HAMILTON TWP –An Atlantic City man was detained Monday for assault and weapons charges in connection to a shooting of a 19 year-old man last month, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.
On Monday, Azaiah Grisom, 19, was detained before Judge Jeffrey J. Waldman in connection to his January 25, 2018 arrest for assault and weapons offenses from a shooting in Atlantic City on December 5, 2017, in which a 19 year-old male was targeted and struck with gunfire.
Grisom is currently charged with Serious Bodily Injury Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm for Unlawful Purposes, all second-degree crimes. The firearm was not recovered at the shooting scene, but bullet wounds to the victim’s body evidence a gun was used to commit the assault. At the detention hearing, the State submitted evidence establishing probable cause to believe the 12/5/17 shooting charged against Grisom was one in a series of retaliatory gang shootings. The court also found no conditions of release could protect the community, or ensure Grisom’s future appearance, and Judge Waldman ordered Grisom detained at the Atlantic County Justice Facility, pending indictment and trial.
The case is a High Risk of Violence (HRV) case that was investigated and charged by the Atlantic City Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit, and assigned to the Prosecutor’s Gangs, Guns and Narcotics Unit for continued investigation and trial.
