ATLANTIC CITY MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN FATAL SHOOTING OF 36 YEAR OLD MAN


MAYS LANDING – A 31 year-old Atlantic City man was arrested and charged Monday evening in the fatal shooting of 36 year-old Bernard Murphy, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.Roberto Rios

On Monday, October 21, 2019 at approximately 12:45 pm, Roberto Rios was arrested without incident at a residence in Mays Landing. Members of the Township of Hamilton Police Department and the ACPO conducted the arrest.   A New Jersey State Police K9 Unit assisted with a search of the area where Rios was arrested.

Rios was transported to the ACPO where he was processed and charged with 2C:11-3A(1) (Murder), 2C:39-5B (Unlawful Possession of a weapon) and 2C:39-4(A)1 (Possession of Weapon for Unlawful Purpose). Rios was detained and is lodged at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

“I want to credit the Atlantic City Police Department, Township of Hamilton Police Department and the ACPO Major Crimes Unit for the swift identification and apprehension of the suspect in this matter. While we cannot always prevent acts of random, senseless violence, criminals should be on notice that we will take all necessary actions to identify, arrest and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law,” said Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner said.

On Thursday, October 17, 2019, at approximately 11:30 pm, Rios shot Murphy several times while in the vicinity of South Florida Avenue and Pacific Avenue. Rios fled the area in a vehicle with a 17 year old juvenile to the area of Sunset and Nevada Avenues in Atlantic City, where the juvenile exited the vehicle and disposed of two firearms into the bay. The juvenile was immediately arrested by members of the Atlantic City Police Department Patrol Division.  The firearms were recovered from the bay.  The juvenile was charged with weapons and eluding and is lodged in Harbor Fields. This investigation was led  by the  Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Atlantic City Police Department Violent Crimes Unit.
