MAYS LANDING- Two brothers–already serving federal life sentences– were sentenced on Wednesday for the murder of an Atlantic City man in February 2013, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.

Atlantic City brothers Mykal and Malik Derry were sentenced to 50 years in New Jersey state prison to be served concurrently to their federal life sentences and must serve 85% of the latest sentence before they are eligible for parole for the Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Murder in the 2013 shooting death of 25 year old Tyquinn James.

“These convictions and sentences demonstrate my office’s commitment to pursuing justice for every family that is a victim of violent crime in Atlantic County. The senseless murder of Tyquinn James was callous and calculated.  We are all safer knowing that Mykal and Malik Derry will never terrorize the streets of Atlantic City again,” Prosecutor Tyner said.

The fatal shooting happened on the corner of Adriatic and S. Carolina Avenues in Atlantic City at approximately 7:30 p.m., on February 10, 2013. According to the autopsy report, James was shot three times, once in the back and twice in the head.

The state is represented by Chief Assistant Prosecutor Erik Bergman and Assistant Prosecutor Marisa McGarvey. The investigation was a joint effort between the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Atlantic City Police Department.
