Absecon Man Indicted In Dollar General Store Shooting Incident

MAYS LANDING, NJ – Jalial Whitted, 38, of Absecon was indicted today on charges stemming from a May 24, 2022, incident at the Dollar General Store in Absecon, where Whitted brandished a handgun and opened fire inside of the store.

Whitted was indicted by an Atlantic County Grand Jury of the following:

• 2 nd degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun.
• 2 nd degree Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose.
• 2 nd degree Certain Persons not to Possess a Firearm.

If convicted, Whitted faces up to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison as a result of his second-degree crimes. The charges stem from an incident which occurred on May 24, 2022 at 9:35 a.m. whereupon members of the Absecon and Pleasantville Police Departments responded to the 700 block of New Road, Absecon for a man with a gun inside a commercial property. Review of video surveillance established Whitted produced a gun inside the store, causing the employees to flee outside. While still inside the store Mr. Whitted discharged at least one round. The interaction between Mr. Whitted and responding police resulted in Mr. Whitted suffering gunshot wounds.

As per New Jersey Attorney General Guidelines, the Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) was notified on the day of incident. The DCJ has designated the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office as the Independent Investigative Unit for the shooting with the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity & Accountability acting as the Independent  Supervisory Reviewer.

This investigation was a cooperative effort by the Absecon Police Department, Pleasantville Police Department, and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
