Violent Crimes Unit

(609) 909-7751

In the early to mid-1990s, there was an alarming increase in violent crime in Atlantic County.    This trend was attributable to the existence of several street gangs that were operating in major metropolitan areas of the county, as well as many other less organized groups.   These groups were involved in criminal activities, including narcotics distribution, aggravated assaults, robbery and weapons offenses, which resulted in violence and otherwise negatively impacted the quality of life of the public where they operated.   To combat this problem, the Violent Crimes Unit was formed in 1994.

This unit is responsible for investigating and prosecuting groups of affiliated individuals whose criminal activities result in violence or detract from the quality of life of the citizens in Atlantic County.   At the time of the unit's creation, there existed in Atlantic County at least three major, identifiable groups, or street gangs, engaged in criminal enterprise.   Through the efforts of this unit, in conjunction with local police, these gangs have been virtually eliminated, with many of their members serving substantial prison terms.

The focus of this unit remains violent criminal activity.   The unit continues to investigate serial violent crime, including bank robbery, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses.   To accomplish this task the unit conducts original investigations and provides assistance to municipal police departments and multi-jurisdiction task forces.   This intensive focus is designed to identify, apprehend and prosecute the offenders.    In addition, the unit conducts training programs designed to aid law enforcement in combating these groups and to educate the public on gang prevention.
