Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office

Trial Teams

(609) 909-7783

The Trial Section of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office is primarily responsible for litigating the majority of criminal prosecutions which occur in Atlantic County Superior Court.   Specifically, the Trial Section is responsible for: post-indictment arraignments; post-indictment bail hearings; pre-trial investigations; trial preparation; pre-trial conferences; motions; plea negotiations; trials; sentencings, and various post-conviction relief motions.

The section is supervised by the First Assistant Prosecutor and a Detective Division Superior Officer.   There are five trial teams each comprised of two assistant prosecutors, two investigators and one secretary.

Upon indictment, a case is randomly assigned a letter designation A, B, C, or D which corresponds to a judge and his/her particular trial team.   The Trial Section team leader then decides which cases each team attorney will handle.   The trial team sergeant supervises the investigators assigned to the five teams to assure cases have been properly investigated and are prepared for trial.

The prosecution of defendants may take six to twelve months from the date of indictment to actual trial.   Most cases, however, result in a guilty plea within four to six months after indictment.

Over the years, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office consistently has been among the leaders in the state both in the timely disposition of indicted cases and in conviction rates of indicted defendants.

Please refer to the section on Victim Witness Advocacy for more information regarding services available to victims and witnesses involved in trial cases.
