Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office

Special Litigation

(609) 909-7680

The Special Litigation Section of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office represents the state in a variety of Appellate and Law Division proceedings, including appeals from judgements of conviction, municipal court appeals and post conviction relief petitions.   It is also responsible for handling forfeitures, extraditions, parole reviews, and sex offender tier review hearings as required by Megan's Law.

The Special Litigation Section reviews and where appropriate, objects to the parole release of Atlantic County inmates in the New Jersey State Prison system.   Special Litigation also moves for the accelerated parole revocation of dangerous offenders.

Special Litigation coordinates the extradition of fugitives located in Atlantic County and wanted elsewhere.   When necessary, Governor's Warrants are prepared for the return of fugitives located elsewhere and wanted in Atlantic County.   The section is also responsible for handling expungement petitions, Interstate Witness subpoenas, permits to carry handguns, and appeals from the denial of firearm permits.

The Special Litigation Section files forfeiture actions relating to the seizure of cash, vehicles and other property from criminal defendants.   Once forfeited, the property is distributed to participating law enforcement agencies.

Special Litigation coordinates the registration, tiering and judicial proceedings for sex offenders living in Atlantic County as required by Megan's Law.   Tier review hearings are held in the Law Division for Tier Two and Tier Three sex offenders.   Court ordered notifications to schools, community organizations, and residents where appropriate, are completed after the hearing.
