Sex Crimes Unit
(609) 909-7957

The Sex Crimes Unit ensures a response to the crime of sexual assault that is equally effective in the detection, arrest and conviction of the sexual offender as it is in the delivery of services designed to meet the needs of the sexual assault survivor. This response is achieved through promoting cooperation and collaboration among professionals in the public and private sectors, sponsoring education and training programs, coordinating law enforcement efforts, employing investigative experience and providing support to other law enforcement agencies.
Adult victims of sexual assault, ages 13 or older, are entitled to the services of the Sexual Assault Response Team, or SART. The team consists of three components – an advocate trained by the Atlantic County Women’s Center, a specially trained law enforcement officer from the relevant municipality, and a specially trained forensic nurse known as a SANE or Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. The SART-designated law enforcement officer receives annual update training from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office legal and investigative personnel.
