The Major Crime Unit of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office is responsible for the investigation of all homicides that occur in Atlantic County.   The investigative staff is charged with the responsibility of responding to the scene of a homicide and directing the investigation. Homicide has no statute of limitations and these investigations remain active until an offender is prosecuted.   The initial case investigator continues to handle the investigation from first response through the criminal trial process.   The unit is staffed by investigators from the prosecutor's office and detectives from the Atlantic City Police Department.

The unit also investigates suspicious deaths, where the circumstances and cause of death may not be immediately obvious; incidents of severe assault where the nature of the injuries threaten the life of the victim; police shootings involving injury or death; and drug related deaths.   The unit assists police agencies from other state jurisdictions in investigating homicides having affiliation with Atlantic County.   On occasion the expertise of these investigators is called upon to assist local police in investigations of other serious crimes.
