Atlantic County Prosecutor Theodore F.L. Housel

Prosecutor Ted Housel was appointed by Governor Jon S. Corzine to be the Atlantic County Prosecutor on June 27, 2007.

As the chief law enforcement officer in Atlantic County, Prosecutor Housel is responsible for issuing directives standardizing law enforcement conduct among the various municipal police departments and for implementing all directives from the State Attorney General.   Prosecutor Housel is not only the chief law enforcement officer in the county, he is also the head of what may be the largest law office in Atlantic County.

Prosecutor Housel, prior to being appointed as the Atlantic County Prosecutor, dedicated his entire career to the practice of criminal law.    He received an A.B. with High Honors and Distinction in Political Science from Rutgers University - Camden, New Jersey campus, and his law degree, a J.D. with Honors from the Rutgers - Camden School of Law in 1978. After a criminal clerkship in Hudson County, Prosecutor Housel began an 18 year career in prosecution, serving as an Assistant Prosecutor in Middlesex, Camden and Atlantic Counties, and as the First Assistant Prosecutor in Cape May County. His tenure in Atlantic County lasted 10 years and he left his career in prosecution in 1995 to open a solo practice in Atlantic County concentrating on the defense of serious criminal matters.

In his career, Prosecutor Housel has tried to verdict four capital murders, both as a prosecutor and defense attorney and has handled many other homicides and other serious criminal cases.

Prosecutor Housel has been a member of the American Bar Association, is a Trustee of the Criminal Law Section of the New Jersey Bar Association, a member of the Atlantic County Bar Association and recently a member of the New Jersey Crime Victim Bar Association.

Because he has had experience both as a prosecutor and as a defense attorney, not only does Prosecutor Housel bring a wealth of criminal law experience to the office, he brings a unique perspective to the Office of the Prosecutor because in the final analysis, the goal of the Prosecutor is not merely to seek convictions but to see that substanial justice is done.

Prosecutor Housel is married and lives in Atlantic County with his wife and four daughters.
